Our Approach
-
Protecting nature
We protect nature by working with communities to reduce their impacts on forests; enabling private investment in forest protection initiatives; and helping local and Indigenous communities protect forests on their lands.
-
Dynamic Ecology
We promote self-sustaining, conservation-based economies in areas with the most importance for people and nature. We do this by creating new conservation models and capacity building models for conservationists, increasing protection of essential natural resources.
-
Engaging communities
Conservation and human development need to be mutually reinforcing. WePlant Inc’s local empowerment work recognizes that people’s quality of life benefit from nature conservation; in many cases, their livelihoods, health and security depend on it directly.

How We Work
The threats to nature are as varied as they are complex. That’s why we employ several different strategies to meet these challenges:
Respect for the rights of indigenous peoples is central to our mission. Just 20 per cent of the world’s land is managed by indigenous nations, and this land houses 80 per cent of the world’s biodiversity. Indigenous nations, however, have sovereign rights to just about 6% of the world’s territory, and these rights are also limited in practice. WePlant Inc promotes the principle of free, prior and informed consent—the freedom of indigenous peoples to give or withhold consent.
We agree that companies have a duty to engage in the protection of the environment on which their activities depend. Businesses should also adopt environmentally and socially friendly policies. In partnership with companies and business organisations, we work within and across sectors to create a large-scale impact.
Nature’s capacity to provide for human well-being requires sound government policy. We provide policymakers with information that helps inform good policy decisions on conservation and human well-being. Our strategy, strategies and techniques help policymakers appreciate the importance of forests and water bodies and help advise the policies needed to conserve these important natural resources.
